چکیده

Aims. We report a serendipitous detection of rapid, large amplitude flux density variations in the highly core-dominated, flat-spectrum radio quasar 1156+295 during an observing session at the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). Methods. The source was observed as a part of the MOJAVE survey programme with the VLBA at 15 GHz on February 5, 2007. Large amplitude variability in the correlated flux density, unexplainable in terms of the source structure, was first discovered while processing the data, and later confirmed by calibrating the antenna gains using 24 other sources observed in the experiment. Results. The source shows variations in the correlated flux density as high as 40% on a timescale of only 2.7 hours. This places 1156+295 between the classical IDV sources and the so-called intra-hour variables. The observed variability timescale and the modulation index of 13% are consistent with interstellar scintillation by a nearby, highly turbulent scattering screen. The large modulation index at 15 GHz implies a scattering measure that is atypically high for a high galactic latitude source such as 1156+295.

Slower Superluminal Velocity for the Quasar 1156 + 295

As part of an ongoing effort to observe high energy γ-ray blazars with VLBI, we have produced 8 and 2 GHz VLBI images, at ten epochs spanning the years 1988 to 1996, of the quasar 1156+295. The VLBI data have been taken from the Washington VLBI correlator’s geodetic database. We have detected four components and have measured their apparent speeds to be 8.8 ± 2.3, 5.3 ± 1.1, 5.5 ± 0.9, and 3.5 ...

VLBI Polarization Observations of Intraday Variability

Global 6 cm VLBI polarization observations of the intraday variable sources 0716+714, 0917+624, and 0954+658 are analyzed. Integrated VLA measurements during the VLBI observations suggest that although there were no substantial total intensity variations, the polarization for all three sources varied signiicantly during the 24-hour VLBI experiment. The VLBI data were divided into 2{3 hour segme...

Intraday Variability in Northern Hemisphere Radio Sources

We summarize results from flux density monitoring campaigns performed with the 100 m radio-telescope at Effelsberg and the VLA during the past 15 yrs. We briefly discuss some of the statistical properties from now more than 40 high declination sources (δ ≥ 30◦), which show Intraday Variability (IDV). In general, IDV is more pronounced for sources with flat radio spectra and compact VLBI structu...

Near-infrared Photometry of Blazars

The rapid variability of blazars in almost all wavelengths is now well established. Two days of observations were conducted at the Palomar Observatory during the nights of 25 and 26 February 1997 with the 5-meter Hale telescope, in order to search for rapid variability in the near-infrared (NIR) bands J, H, Ks for a selection of eight blazars. With the possible exception of 1156+295 (4C 29.45),...

We present preliminary results from a VLBI survey at λ = 6 cm of a sample of 35 sources with flux densities of 2 – 100 mJy. These sources were selected from the VLA FIRST survey at λ = 20 cm, in a 3 degree field around the bright calibrator 1156+295, simply by imposing S 20 > 10 mJy and θ < 5 arcsec. MERLIN observations at λ6 cm detected 70/127 of these sources with a threshold of 2 mJy at 50 m...
